Considering a breast reduction? Plastic Surgeons of Lexington can answer all your questions.
Women with excessively large and pendulous breasts not only experience dissatisfaction with body image but also physical pain and discomfort. This can impair a woman’s ability to lead an full and active life. If you have large breasts that limit your physical activity and cause pain, breast reduction may be right for you.
Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammoplasty, removes excess breast tissue and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with a woman’s body and potentially alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts. Breast reduction is most commonly performed through a keyhole shaped incision. Through this incision, excess breast tissue and skin is excised. The nipple, which remains tethered to its original blood and nerve supply, is then repositioned to a higher position on the chest wall. Occasionally, for extremely pendulous breasts, the nipple and areola may need to be removed and transplanted to a higher position on the breast as a graft.
