Have you been considering having that tattoo from college spring break removed?  Here are the things you need to know about Tattoo Removal.

Although we have always been told tattoos are permanent, now you can safely and effectively have your tattoo removed.  There are some factors to take into consideration.  First and foremost, you always want to make sure you have the right person performing your tattoo removal procedure (an experienced Plastic Surgeon is a great place to start.)  When you meet with your doctor, there are a few things you should discuss:

  1. Why do you want to get the tattoo removed?

Did you have an allergic reaction to the ink?  Do you wish to no longer have a tattoo?  Are you having this tattoo removed so you can replace it with another tattoo?

  1. What are your expectations for the removal of your tattoo?

Some factors can make removing your tattoos more difficult.  For instance, new tattoos can be more difficult to remove than older tattoos, some ink colors can be more difficult to remove than others, and if you have a homemade tattoo, it can be more difficult to remove than a tattoo done by a professional.

  1. What is your medical history?

Based on certain medical conditions, not everyone is a candidate for tattoo removal.  That’s why it is always best to consult with your doctor.  They can help you make a decision if tattoo removal is right for you.

Complete tattoo removal is not always possible.  It is important to know there may be some scarring or skin discoloration after having a tattoo removed.  If you are considering a new tattoo, you should take into account things like the location, color, and size of the tattoo if you are concerned you might want to have it removed later on.  If you have any questions about tattoo removal, or would like to schedule a consultation to have a current tattoo looked at by one of our Board Certified Plastic Surgeons, please call (859) 276-3883.
