About Post-Weight-Loss Tummy Tuck
A post-weight-loss tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that removes soft tissue and skin from across the abdomen to restore a smoother and more defined silhouette. Losing a significant amount of weight can feel life-changing for many patients, yet the physical changes this process leaves behind can conceal the fruits of your labors, with up to 96% of patients experiencing redundant skin following weight loss. (2) By undergoing a post-weight-loss tummy tuck, you can address these concerns with ease and achieve a look that aligns with your efforts.
Benefits
Post-weight-loss tummy tucks offer several benefits that you can enjoy, including:
- Removed Skin: A tummy tuck can remove your excess, sagging skin to restore a smoother and tighter look and feel.
- Tightened Muscles: Your surgeon can perform this procedure to restore the strength of any inelastic or weakened abdominal muscles.
- Elevated Contours: A post-weight-loss tummy tuck can restore your figure’s natural definition and create a more desirable silhouette.
- Heightened Self-Esteem: Elevating your appearance can improve your sense of body positivity and provide you with confidence that you can carry in every scenario.
- Tailored Treatment Plans: Our surgical team customizes each procedure according to your natural anatomy, aesthetic goals, and personal needs.
- Lasting Results: When you preserve them with a stable weight, the results of a post-weight-loss tummy tuck can last for many years to come.
- Better Fitting Clothing: Many of our patients find that their clothing looks better and fits more comfortably after they undergo their tummy tuck.
Candidates
You may be an ideal candidate for a post-weight-loss tummy tuck if you are interested in removing loose or sagging skin from around your abdomen after losing significant weight through traditional lifestyle changes, GLP-1 medications, or bariatric surgery.
To qualify for treatment, you should be in good general health and maintain realistic expectations regarding your results. You should already be at a stable weight you can maintain long-term. It is also important that you are non-smoking or willing to quit using nicotine. Our team of plastic surgeons will assess your candidacy during your consultation.
Personal Consultation
The first step to completing your weight-loss transformation is attending a personal consultation. During this visit, your surgeon will meet with you to learn more about how they can help you. They will explain what a tummy tuck consists of, review your medical history, discuss your concerns, and establish realistic expectations. They will also assess your natural anatomy and skin quality.
Your surgeon will use this information to finalize your candidacy and create your treatment plan. They will explain what you can expect during, before, and after your procedure. They will also answer any questions you may have.
If you are ready to schedule this consultation, please contact us online or call (859) 276-3883 to reach the front desk of our Lexington office. We are proud to serve the areas of Central Kentucky, Cincinnati, Knoxville, and Northern Kentucky,
Preparation
Once your surgeon has finalized your candidacy, they will give you a set of detailed instructions to help you prepare. These instructions may vary according to the details of your procedure, but they typically include:
- Avoiding Certain Medications: Refrain from taking any medications or supplements that contain blood-thinning properties.
- Coordinating Care: Ask a trusted friend or relative to drive you home and stay with you for the first few days of your recovery.
- Preparing Time Away: Make arrangements to take time away from your professional and personal responsibilities and commitments.
- Running Errands: Fill your prescriptions and rearrange your home so it is a comfortable recovery environment.
- Stopping Substance Use: Discontinue consuming nicotine and alcohol in the weeks before your procedure, and maintain your cessation until you have fully recovered.
Procedure
When you arrive for your procedure, a member of the Plastic Surgeons of Lexington team will transport you to the operating room, where you will receive general anesthesia to ensure your comfort.
Once it has taken effect, your surgeon will place a horizontal incision just above the pubic area that extends between the hips. If you possess a significant amount of skin laxity across your upper abdomen, your surgeon may place a second incision within your navel. They will then separate the skin from its underlying tissues before suturing your stretched abdominal muscles together and removing excess tissue. Your skin will then be redraped over your figure and the excess will be excised. If necessary, your surgeon may also reshape and reposition your navel to a more central and proportionate position. Your incisions will then be closed, and you will be transported to a recovery room to rest.
Recovery
Our surgical team performs each tummy tuck procedure on an outpatient basis, which means that you will be released on the same day that your enhancements are completed. During your consultation, your surgeon will give you a set of written post-operative instructions to guide you.
We recommend that you avoid sitting for long periods of time and begin moving as soon as the day after your procedure is performed. We suggest starting by taking light walks to reduce stiffness in the treated areas and improve your circulation, which can promote better healing. You should avoid straining your body, lifting, or bending over, as these activities can increase bleeding and swelling in the treated regions. During this time, your surgeon will also have you wear a compression garment to minimize swelling and maintain your curves as your tissues heal.
After approximately one week, your surgeon will have you return for a follow-up appointment. Here, they will replace or remove your dressings and remove any surgical drains. Any non-dissolving stitches can typically be removed after 2 weeks, and you may remove your compression garment after several weeks.
As you continue to heal, you may return to more of your daily activities. However, you should avoid anything strenuous or demanding until your surgeon has cleared you to return. Any scars will also fade and flatten with time until they become barely noticeable.
Results
You will be able to notice immediate improvements, but the full results of your post-weight-loss tummy tuck will become more apparent once you have fully recovered and any residual swelling has subsided. While your results will vary, you can expect smoother and tighter skin, more accentuated contours, improved proportions, a flatter stomach, and a more defined waist. You may also notice improvements in your mobility.
The results of a post-weight-loss tummy tuck are long-lasting, with effects that you can enjoy for several years to come. However, you must maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle habits to preserve your results.
Hair Restoration After Weight Loss
Significant weight loss can sometimes increase hair shedding or create noticeable thinning. Changes in nutrition, rapid weight loss, hormonal shifts and the physical stress placed on the body can all contribute to temporary or ongoing changes in hair growth. While shedding may improve over time, it can also leave some patients with areas of visible thinning or reduced hair density. Though you’ve made significant progress in a weight loss journey, we understand how this, alongside lax skin, can be a frustrating new hurdle.
At Hair Specialists at PSL, we can evaluate your concerns, discuss possible contributing factors, and determine an effective approach. In many cases, this means combining hair restoration treatments with post-weight-loss body contouring to help you emerge from your weight loss journey in the body you’ve worked hard to achieve.
NeoGraft Hair Restoration
NeoGraft Hair Restoration is a minimally invasive hair transplant procedure that uses your own healthy hair follicles to restore areas of thinning or hair loss. By strategically placing follicles where additional density is needed, NeoGraft can help create a natural-looking result using your own hair.
PRP for Hair
PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is a concentrated serum made of your own blood that helps support hair follicles and encourages healthier hair growth by flooding the treatment area with healthy blood, oxygen, nutrients, growth factors, and more. This treatment may be recommended on its own or as part of a broader hair restoration plan, depending on your hair and scalp needs.
At-Home and Medical-Grade Hair Care
A consistent hair-care routine can also play an important role in supporting the health and appearance of thinning hair. We can recommend medical-grade products and other tools designed to support scalp health, strengthen existing hair and help improve the overall look and feel of your hair.
Cost of Post-Weight-Loss Tummy Tucks in Central Kentucky
The pricing of your post-weight-loss tummy tuck will vary depending on several factors of your treatment plan, such as the exact corrections your surgeon performs and the extent of the procedure overall. Once you have met with your surgeon to discuss and establish these details, they will give you a comprehensive cost estimate.
The Plastic Surgeons of Lexington additionally offer financing for those who qualify.
