About Augmentation Mastopexy

Often performed on patients after significant weight loss or pregnancy, breast augmentation and lift surgery (mastopexy) can reshape the breasts as well as reposition the nipple to a higher position. The skin around the breast is extremely prone to stretching and ptosis (sagging), so this combined procedure is performed to give women fuller, perkier breasts.

Breast Augmentation and Mastopexy

A breast augmentation is a surgical procedure where the surgeon creates a pocket in the breast, either above or below the pectoral muscle, to make room for a silicone or saline implant. Its main purpose is to increase the size of the breast. If performed on a patient with sagging skin, it will still add volume to the area, but the breast tissue will continue to sag and collect around the ribs. In combination with a lift, the surgeon can create an entirely new breast shape and structure.

A breast lift (mastopexy) is often performed in older patients, or for patients who have severe ptosis on the lower half of the breast. If the skin in this area starts to sag, it can be very difficult for the breasts to keep their shape, and this affects the size of the mound as well. There are many ways to address this condition, and one is the addition of implants.

Combining These Procedures

To begin the breast augmentation with lift procedure, the surgeon makes carefully planned incisions based on the patient’s individual needs and preferences. Various incision techniques can be used, including the periareolar, vertical, or anchor incision. The choice of technique depends on factors such as the degree of breast ptosis (sagging), the desired implant size and type, and the patient’s skin quality. (1)

Benefits of Breast Augmentation with Lift

This combined procedure provides many benefits for patients seeking improved breast shape and size: (2)

  • Enhanced breast shape and size
  • Improved breast symmetry
  • Lifted and firmer breasts
  • Restored youthful appearance
  • Corrected sagging or drooping breasts
  • Reduced back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Easier fitting of clothing and bras
  • Enhanced overall body image

Combining these two procedures can save you both time and money, allowing you to enjoy your new contoured physique with less worry. Whether you have always wanted fuller breasts, or you have recently noticed sagging, a combined breast augmentation and lift could be your solution.

Personal Consultation

The first step toward receiving your breast augmentation and lift procedure is attending your personal consultation at Plastic Surgeons of Lexington. During this appointment, we will ask about your medical history and any past procedures you may have undergone.

We will perform a detailed and comprehensive medical examination to determine the condition of your breasts and what procedure methods best suit your circumstances. It is important that you take this time to explain your specific desires and expectations for the outcome of your procedure. This will ensure that your surgeon understands what needs to be done in order for you to be satisfied with the final contour and size of your breasts. Make sure to prepare any questions you may have about the entire process and make your surgeon aware of any concerns you may have. They will educate you on types and size of implants, surgery methods, and complete procedure and aftercare timeframes. Your procedure date will be scheduled at this time, as well as any follow up appointments.

How Do I Prepare for this Combined Procedure?

In order to prepare yourself for this procedure, there are multiple steps you should take:

  • Get a mammogram: One of our surgeons might suggest performing a mammogram to rule out any malignancies and require a reference point for any future mammograms.
  • Avoid tobacco and nicotine products: Ingestion of these products can hinder the healing process.
  • Stop taking certain medications: Avoid NSAIDs and blood thinning medications like Advil and Tylonol.
  • Arrange a ride home from surgery: You will be sore and groggy after your procedure and will need a friend or family member to take you home so you can rest.

During your consultation, your surgeon gives you detailed instructions that must be followed to ensure a smooth procedure process.

Breast Augmentation and Lift Procedure

Before the procedure starts, we will administer general anesthesia to keep you comfortable as the augmentation and lift are performed. Once the surgeon makes the incisions, they lift and reshape the underlying breast tissue to create a more youthful and aesthetically pleasing contour. This involves repositioning the nipple-areola complex to a higher position for improved symmetry and proportionality. If necessary, the surgeon also removes excess skin to eliminate sagging.

After the breast lift portion of the procedure is complete, the surgeon moves on to the augmentation phase. Breast implants are carefully selected based on the patient’s desires and the recommendations of the surgeon. The implants may be placed either above or below the chest muscle, depending on factors such as the patient’s existing breast tissue, body type, and desired outcome.

Recovery and Results

The typical downtown for this procedure is one to two weeks. During that time, you should stay away from any strenuous activities like exercise or jobs that require heavy lifting. As you heal, you will experience mild swelling and bruising, but your discomfort levels should be manageable with minimal medication. Your surgeon will prescribe these medications and it’s helpful to fill them before your procedure date. You should be back to your normal self after six to eight weeks.

Complementary Procedures – Fat Transfer for Augmentation

For certain patients, a volume increase using fat transfer can be a great alternative to implants. Whether you are looking for a more subtle increase in volume or a more natural look after augmentation, fat transfer can be utilized as long as the patient has enough excess fat for a transfer to work. For the procedure, liposuction is used to remove fat from a donor area like the abdomen, flanks, or thighs. The fat is then cleaned and reinjected into the breast after the excess skin is removed. Then the breasts are sutured in the same fashion performed in a mastopexy with implants.

Fat transfer can give a milder, more natural result for the patient. Incorporating it into breast augmentation and lift also provides the patient the opportunity to remove stubborn fat and sculpt other parts of the body. (2)

FAQ

Can breast augmentation help with sagging breasts?

Breast augmentation is primarily designed to enhance the size and shape of the breasts. While it can provide some lift to mildly sagging breasts, it may not be sufficient for those with significant sagging. In such cases, a breast lift (mastopexy) may be recommended to address the excess skin and reposition the breasts to a more youthful position. The two procedures may also be combined for comprehensive results.

Can breast augmentation correct breast asymmetry?

Yes, breast augmentation can help correct breast asymmetry by placing different-sized implants to achieve a more balanced and symmetrical result. During a consultation, we will assess your specific needs and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan for achieving your desired outcome.
